Asbestos Testing Is Important

Asbestos Testing Is Important

Asbestos Testing is important as it helps to detect a variety of diseases that are fatal to human health. In order to stay safe, it is crucial to do asbestos testing once in a while.

The advancement in modern technology made it possible to detect the presence of toxic elements. Upgraded material has replaced the age-old use of poor-quality materials for construction purposes.

Before we proceed, let us first check what is asbestos and why is it so harmful.

Definition Of Asbestos

Asbestos is a fibrous material of silica. There are six different varieties of asbestos and each contains thin fiber-like crystal materials that easily break off and mix with the air. These materials when inhaled can cause a number of fatal health diseases like – Asbestosis, Mesothelioma, Pleural Plaque, and in severe cases, Cancer.

Different Kinds of Asbestos

  • Asbestosis

Asbestos fibers cause a chronic condition in the human lungs known as asbestosis. Breathing into the asbestos fibers for prolonged periods can cause the scarring of lung tissues and shortness of breath. Conducting regular asbestos testing is important to reduce the risk of asbestosis.

  • Pleural Plaque

Pleural Plaque is the condition in which the lining of the lungs or the pleura thickens. Inhaling asbestos fibers for a prolonged period causes this disease. Unlike other diseases, this is less fatal. Patients with pleural plaque often face unpleasant sensations while breathing.

  • Mesothelioma

This forms malignant tumors inside the intestines, the stomach, the lungs, and several other organs. Mesothelioma often leads to breathing problems and chest pain.

Surgery, proper chemotherapy, and radiation can cure Mesolithioma still it is better to be safe beforehand.

  • Cancer

Minimize the risk of cancer through regular asbestos testing. The presence of asbestos fibers in the air can cause cancer in the lungs, pharynx, stomach, ovary, colon, etc.

One can treat cancer yet the survival chances are bleak if it surpasses.  Proper medication can treat cancer. Lung cancer, which is the deadliest kills 25% of the world’s population every year.

Why Is Asbestos Testing Necessary?

50 countries have already banned asbestos as it is hazardous to human health.

Asbestos testing is necessary to ensure a place is safe. There are a number of purposes for carrying out an asbestos inspection. These are:

  • To locate the amount of asbestos and determine the amount
  • To identify how much it is accessible
  • To scrutinize the type of asbestos present

Three Types Of Asbestos Inspection

  • Inspection Through Management

Create a management plan to ensure the safety of the locals on the premises. Collect proper samples and send them to the lab for further inspection.

  • Inspection Through Pre-Demolition

Check the area for the presence of asbestos firers prior to demolition works.

  • Inspection Through Pre-Refurbishment

Similar to pre-demolition, the inspection takes a bit longer compared to normal.

Asbestos Testing As Per The Law

Asbestos Testing becomes crucial in certain situations. As per OHSA or Occupational Health and Safety Act, homeowners are responsible for carrying out asbestos testing when they understand the presence of “non-friable ACM(Asbestos Containing Material)” within the building premises.

The Law requires every homeowner to be responsible and carry out asbestos testing at regular intervals under professional guidance.

Moreover, the building should be under the control of an Asbestos Management Program(AMP).

Under the surveillance of AMP, homeowners are required to register their buildings for testing. All the other occupants should be informed and the number of asbestos materials should be recorded and maintained.

The Next Step

If you have found traces of asbestos-containing material or any other similar firable elements close to where you stay, contact a professional asbestos environmental consultant.

Avoid getting in close proximity as inhaling would make you susceptible to the risks. Moreover, it may lead to the direct spread of asbestos in and around the surrounding areas.

In case an abatement project is required, choose a professional contractor. Type 2 and Type 3 abatement projects are carried out in multiple-family residential areas and other commercial properties. Hiring a professional will allow you to stop the spread and hence minimize the toxicity.
